Executive Committee Meetings in Nashville
Thursday, September 20, 2012 Comments (0)
My first meeting was on Sunday night at the Renaissance Hotel. The officers meeting is what I would call "the meeting before the meeting." Participants included the President and CEO of the Executive Committee, Dr. Frank Page, Executive Vice President Augie Boto, Vice President of Finance, Bill Townes, EC chairman, Ernest Easley, Recording Secretary Dr. Stephen Wilson, Business and Finance Committee Chairman Chris Osbourne, Administrative Committee Chairman, Dr. John Yeats, Cooperative Program Committee Chairman, Rodney Autrey, and myself (vice-chairman of the EC).
Our meeting began at 6:00 p.m. with dinner. Then we had orientation for the new officers, led by Augie Boto. Then we reviewed the "business" that was going to be on the agenda for our meetings on Monday and Tuesday, which was quite lengthy. After this discussion, then Dr. Page addressed the officers. We concluded our meeting at 11:30 p.m.
On Monday afternoon, between 1:00 - 4:30 p.m., the 8 workgroups met to discuss the items on their agendas. Each met at different times. I attended the Audit workgroup, the convention ministries workgroup, and the convention arrangements workgroup meetings.
Our meetings continued on Monday night with Plenary Session I, where all members of the Executive Committee come together. We heard reports from Golden Gate Seminary, LifeWay Christian Resources, Women's Missionary Union, and the International Mission Board. We also heard a report from Dr. Frank Page, as well as the SBC President's address from Dr. Fred Luter, Jr. We dealt with other issues, and then dismissed around 9:30 p.m.
On Tuesday morning, between 8:30 - 10:00 a.m., the Administrative, Cooperative Program, and Business and Finance Committees met. After a brief break, Plenary Session II began at 10:30 a.m. We heard reports from the presidents of Southeastern, Southwestern, and New Orleans Seminaries, as well as reports from the North American Mission Board and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Then the 3 committees brought their recommendations to the full body for discussion, debate, and a vote. Also, the presidents of Guidestone Financial Resources, Southern Seminary, Midwestern Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Foundation brought reports. The meeting concluded around 12:30 p.m.
I am truly grateful GOD has given me the privilege of representing Circle Drive and our Colorado Convention on the Executive Committee. Our next meeting will be in Nashville in February 2013.
