The 14er club met at 4:00 a.m. this morning for our first hike of the season. We drove approximately15 miles north of Buena Vista, and drove approximately 12 miles on Chaffee County 390 (a dirt road). Huron Peak has the distinction of being the Sawatch Fourteener that is farthest from a paved road! We had to park 1.7 miles from the South Winfield trailhead, because the road turned into a 4 wheel drive only road.
We began our hike at 6:45 a.m. From the trailhead to the summit, we hiked 9.2 miles round trip. Combined with the hike to the trailhead (3.4 miles roundtrip), we hiked a total of 12.6 miles. Our hike netted almost 4,000 ft. in altitude. Wayne Cantwell was the first hiker to reach the summit, at 9:45 a.m. Carmen Martinez, Nicholas Rasmussen, Matt Schovel, and myself joined him! We encountered continual winds between 20-30 mph, with gusts of 40-50 mph. It made the hike a little more challenging! We arrived back at 1:15 p.m., making the round trip 6 1/2 hours, including an extended time to eat and enjoy the view at the summit!
We all enjoying viewing and experiencing the beauty of GOD's glorious creation: Lakes, beautiful wildflowers, running streams, a panoramic view of mountains with snow, huge Ponderosa and Lodge pole pine trees, and, of course, the breathtaking view at the summit!
Our next hike is scheduled for July. We will seek to ascend 2 Fourteeners, Gray and Torreys Peaks.
